Recommended professions

Recommended for Mage:

  • First Aid — Free bandages: fewer breaks and less food to buy.
  • Cooking — Food that restores health and mana between fights.
  • Fishing — Fish for cooking and some extra gold during downtime.

The mage is a ranged caster in cloth. It kills from a distance, controls monsters with frost and makes its own food and water. However builds a step-by-step leveling route for the mage in WoW Forever, from level 1 to 60, with every quest, trainer visit and trip shown on the map.

Strengths and weaknesses

  • Strong ranged damage: most monsters die before they reach you.
  • Frost spells slow and root targets, so you take few hits.
  • Conjured food and water save gold and downtime between fights.
  • Teleports to your faction's capitals shorten trips to the trainer.
  • Weak in melee and fragile in cloth: a bad pull or a patrol can kill you fast.
  • Mana runs out on long fights; rest, drink or use your wand.

Recommended leveling spec: Frost

The guide's build puts every point in Frost up to Ice Barrier at level 40: Improved Frostbolt, Elemental Precision, Ice Shards, Frostbite, Ice Block and Cold Snap on the way. After 40 it adds Shatter, Winter's Chill and more Frost talents, then Wand Specialization at 60. Frostbolt from level 4, Frost Nova and the wand carry the whole build. A Fire then Frost build is offered as an alternative for players who prefer raw damage.

To save gold for your mount, the guide skips spells the Frost build does not use in solo play, such as Arcane Missiles, Scorch, Flamestrike and higher Fireball ranks. Forever adds new talents and spells, such as Frostfire Bolt; the guide leaves that spell out because Frostbolt already benefits from your Frost talents.

Weapons, stats and mana

  • Weapons: a staff in the main hand and a wand. No vendor sells a wand before level 15.
  • Stats: intellect and spell damage first, then stamina; spirit helps mana regeneration out of combat.
  • Finish low targets with the wand to save mana, and conjure water before each trip.
  • Evocation and mana gems refill your mana during long fights.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling several monsters without Frost Nova ready.
  • Buying every rank of every spell and arriving at level 40 without mount gold.
  • Forgetting Polymorph on a second monster, or breaking it with area spells.
  • Blinking into a new group of monsters instead of away from the fight.

What your However guide includes

Your guide adds the mage class quests, every trainer visit with the spells worth buying, the Frost talent order, a staff and wand plan by level bracket, and safety notes for PvP realms. Create your mage to get it, or try the build in the talent calculator.

The Horde reference mage is an undead. Undead, troll and orc can all be mages in WoW Forever; the orc mage is new to Forever. Undead start in Tirisfal Glades at Deathknell, while orcs and trolls start in the Valley of Trials, in Durotar.

  • At level 10, the class quest sends you either to Undercity for "The Balnir Farmstead" or to Sen'jin Village for "Ju-Ju Heaps"; both reward a staff or an orb.
  • At level 26, a class chain asks for items from Ashenvale, turned in at The Crossroads, and rewards a robe.
  • Wands are sold by Katis in Orgrimmar and Zane Bradford in Undercity.
  • From level 10, the shared Horde route continues in Silverpine Forest from The Sepulcher; Ragefire Chasm and Wailing Caverns are among the first dungeons.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best mage spec for leveling in WoW Forever?
The guide uses Frost: it puts points in Frost up to Ice Barrier at level 40, then adds Shatter and Winter's Chill. Frost slows and roots monsters, so you kill them at range and take less damage.
When can a mage use a wand?
The mage can use a wand from the start, but no vendor sells one before level 15. The guide plans a vendor wand from that bracket, then better wands as you level.
Can a mage level without spending gold on food and water?
Mostly, yes. Conjure Water and conjured food cover your own needs, which is one of the mage's main advantages. You still need gold for spells, a few reagents and your mount.
Does the guide include the mage class quests?
Yes. The guide includes the starting and level 10 class quests and the robe chains on the way. It leaves out chains that need a dungeon or a group to finish, such as the mage wand chain.
Can I play a Fire mage with However?
Yes. The talent calculator offers a Fire then Frost build for players who prefer raw damage. The generated guide follows the Frost build by default, because it is safer when leveling alone.
